Mac Tweaking Tool CandyBar Is Now Free, Updated for Mountain Lion [Customization]

By Alan Henry, LifehackerAugust 06, 2012 at 08:00AM

Mac Tweaking Tool CandyBar Is Now Free, Updated for Mountain Lion OS X: CandyBar is a customization tool for OS X that lets you customize the Dock appearance and layout, change the notification icons under running apps, change Finder system icons, and in general really tweak your Mac to look the way you want it. Panic, the developers behind the app, have updated it to support OS X Mountain Lion, dropped support for the app, and they’re giving it away for free.

You may have seen CandyBar used in some of our Mac featured desktops—it’s often used to tweak the look and feel of the Dock. It’s a great tool, but it used to run you about $30. The news isn’t all good though: the reason Panic is making the app free and dropping support for it is because they see OS X steadily turning into iOS—meaning they think Apple will eventually prohibit users from the level of tweaking and customization that Mac users currently enjoy, so they don’t see much of a future for CandyBar. Update: Yes, it’s important to note that CandyBar in Mountain Lion cannot be used to change icons of signed apps from the App Store, Finder apps, or Dock icons. These restrictions only apply to Mountain Lion though, and everything else works.

Regardless of the implications of Panic’s move, the app works well and is completely free to download. If you want to spice up your Mac’s dock a bit, now’s the time to grab it. You won’t be able to change icons for apps downloaded from the Mac App Store (again, Apple security at work), but you will be able to change just about everything else. Do you already use CandyBar? Used the free trial but didn’t want to drop the cash? Let us know what you think of the app in the discussions below.

Do Yourself a Favor: Set Up Mountain Lion’s Built-in Text Expansion with These Shortcuts [Video]

By Adam Dachis, LifehackerAugust 02, 2012 at 03:00PM

Surprise! Mountain Lion has a great new secret feature: basic text expansion. Here’s how to set it up and some handy shortcuts to get you started.

For a demo of how it works and how to set it up, check out the video above.

Set Up Text Expansion (Substitution)

Do Yourself a Favor: Set Up Mountain Lion's Built-in Text Expansion with These ShortcutsFirst things first, let’s get text expansion (or Substitution, as Apple calls it) set up. To get it set up, either watch the video up top or follow these steps:

  1. Open up System Preferences.
  2. Choose the Language & Text section.
  3. Click the Text tab.
  4. Press the + button at the bottom-right corner of the window.
  5. Type the shortcut you want to use in the left text box, and what you want that shortcut to expand to in the right box.
  6. Repeat as desired.

That’s it! Very easy.

Phrases You Should Add Right Now

Here are some phrases you’ll want to add to your Mac right now. The nice thing about the feature is it works much like autocorrect, so you can set a text expansion shortcut to a portion of a word and it’ll only expand if you type a space after the shortcut. For example, you could have a shortcut called “sig” and type the word signature without worrying about the shortcut expanding when you don’t want it to expand. This opens up plenty of simple shortcut options. Here are the ones we think everyone will find useful right away.

Note: You don’t need to put a comma before your snippets, but adding an unusual character ahead of the word helps to ensure you won’t get any surprise expansions.

  • ,email -> your@emailaddress.com, so you never need to type your email when sending a message to yourself or sharing it with someone else.
  • ,phone -> your phone number, so you can easily share your phone number without the need to type it or even remember it.
  • ,addr -> your address, so you don’t have to type out the entire thing.
  • ,sig -> your email signature, in case you only want to use it sometimes and not with every message.
  • THX -> thanks!, or however you want to end an email.
  • Code – If you write code, text expansion is really helpful. Just include code snippets and you can type out repetitive code much faster.

For more handy snippets, check out our text expansion guide. If you’d like something a bit more robust than OS X’s built-in option, check out these options.

Thanks for the tip, Brandon!

Learn The Rules To Any Sport With One Of The Slickest Apps You’ve Ever Seen [iOS]

By Yaara Lancet, MakeUseOfAugust 02, 2012 at 09:31PM

learn sports rulesEvery four years, we all become sports experts. The Olympic Games give many of us a chance and a motivation to watch sports events we otherwise have no contact with, and the upcoming London 2012 Games are no different. Pretty soon we’ll find ourselves watching judo, swimming, gymnastics and cycling, after not being in touch with these sports for almost four years. If you’re anything like me, you probably find yourself learning the rules all over again every four years, sometime having to watch several matches before you can pick them up again.

Well, surprise surprise, there’s an app for that! Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports is a beautiful iOS app that lays out rules and interesting facts about dozens of different sports, most of them Olympic, which means you can now start watching any event already knowing exactly how points are scored, how things are done, and why the heck this guy won and not the other. For only $0.99, this is a true steal.

Everything You Need To Know About Sports

Curly’s Pocket Guide is arranged as packs of cards, each card or pack representing a different line of sports. As if made especially for the summer Olympics, the app includes almost any sport you’ll find in the games, and gives simple and concise summaries of everything you need to know about each sport.

You can browse the different cards to find the sport you want to learn about, or tap the search icon on the top right for as-you-type search.

If you’re not sure what you want to learn about next, the app features random “Did you know?” question which sometimes pop up when you browse the cards. These questions are always intriguing, prompting you to tap the card and learn more about this specific sport and its interesting facts.

Sports that include different disciplines or different events are represented by packs or cards. For example, if you choose swimming, you’ll find different cards for butterfly, backstroke, medleys, etc. This way you can focus on the exact event you’re watching at the moment, learning its own format and rules.

When you tap a card, all the basic yet important information about your chosen discipline will appear in an easy to read format. The information is organized under convenient headlines, and even includes images when text is not enough.

Aside from the rules, the most fun aspect of Curly’s Pocket Guide is the trivia. Each card you look at includes fascinating facts about relevant records, contestants, etc. If you find a fact you really like, you can instantly share it with your friends through the app. For example, I found out that Olympic swimmers travel as fast as a hippo while doing the backstroke. If that’s not worth sharing on Twitter, I don’t know what is.

Enjoy The Games!

All in all, Curly’s is the perfect companion for the upcoming Olympics, and for any other time you find yourself watching an sports event you don’t know enough about. In about 5 minutes, you can turn from clueless to expert, and impress all your friends with your brilliant knowhow.

Olympic Photographer Lens Cap Fail

By Eric Reagan, Photography BayAugust 02, 2012 at 07:02PM

How many of you have ever left your lens cap on the camera and missed an important shot?  (I’m guilty.)

The photographer in the above video had the misfortune of making that mistake in front of TV cameras for the whole world to see.  I hope he still got a keeper or two after he figured out the malfunction.
